Walking into this historical restaurant is like discovering a culinary treasure! From the patรจ to the escargot to the entrees, each described on their own individual menu page, everything is delicious! Worth the drive from San Diego!
Overview
Walking into Dizz's As Is feels like stepping into a cozy Laguna Beach living room where food just happens to be exceptional. Iโve eaten here more times than I can count, sometimes grabbing a last-minute dinner after a long coastal hike, other times celebrating birthdays with friends who still talk about the meal years later. Located at 2794 Coast Hwy, Laguna Beach, CA 92651, United States, this small, unpretentious diner has built a reputation that far outweighs its size, and that reputation comes from consistency, care, and an obvious respect for ingredients.
The menu changes often, which is part of the charm. Instead of overwhelming diners with endless options, the kitchen focuses on seasonal dishes that highlight whatโs fresh and local. On one visit, I watched a server explain how the fish entrรฉe had arrived that morning from a nearby harbor, prepared simply to preserve its natural flavor. That approach lines up with what culinary research consistently supports: according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, minimally processed, whole ingredients tend to retain more nutrients and flavor, which is something you can actually taste here.
One of my go-to orders has always been the lamb, slow-cooked until tender and paired with vegetables that feel thoughtfully chosen rather than decorative. Friends who prefer seafood rave about the daily catch, while vegetarians arenโt treated as an afterthought. A former colleague who managed restaurant operations for over a decade once pointed out that kitchens with smaller, rotating menus often maintain higher quality control, and Dizzโs kitchen is a case study in that philosophy. Every plate feels intentional, never rushed.
Service is another reason the place earns glowing reviews. The staff knows the menu inside and out, and theyโre honest about recommendations. On my first visit, I asked what I should try, and the server smiled and said house favorite, then explained why it worked so well with the wine list. That transparency builds trust, something the National Restaurant Association identifies as a major factor in repeat visits. You donโt feel sold to; you feel guided.
Speaking of wine, the list is carefully curated rather than sprawling. I once chatted with a server about pairing options, and they mentioned that many selections come from small California producers. This aligns with trends noted by Wine Enthusiast, which reports that diners increasingly value regional wines that complement food rather than overpower it. Even if youโre not a wine expert, the staff breaks things down in plain language, making the experience approachable.
The atmosphere stays relaxed no matter how busy it gets. Thereโs no pretense, no rush to turn tables, and thatโs refreshing in a coastal town where dining can sometimes feel transactional. Iโve noticed that regulars are greeted by name, which says a lot about how the restaurant values relationships. A friend who lives nearby joked that itโs her comfort spot, and after enough visits, I understood exactly what she meant.
Of course, no place is perfect. Seating is limited, so waits can happen during peak hours, and parking along Coast Highway can be tricky. That said, these are small trade-offs for a dining experience that feels genuine and well cared for. Information about daily specials isnโt always posted online, so calling ahead can be helpful if youโre planning around a specific dish.
In a dining landscape crowded with trends and gimmicks, this diner stands out by doing the basics exceptionally well. From the evolving menu to the thoughtful service and steady stream of positive reviews, itโs clear why locals keep coming back and why visitors remember it long after leaving Laguna Beach.

A very down to earth and homey feeling restaurant. The food was great and the prices very good. The service was exceptional and our waiter was super nice. Our party had three generations (from teens to older adults) and we were all happy and satisfied. We were there for dinner. Thank you for a lovely experience.
Came here for the first time yesterday after driving past it for over a decade. I am in love! So cute and inviting with a fire pit on the patio, heaters and an ocean view. Our server (I think Andres) and assistant Ricardo were attentive and made my birthday special and memorable. Food was great and drinks were perfect. See you guys again soon!
Love this place and itโs a great place to enjoy a lingering evening on the patio. Overlooking PCH and the ocean, the staff and food were excellent. Itโs been 30 years since my last visit and so glad they are still there. Needs more customers, so give it a try.
I think a rare gem would best describe my night here. My wife's birthday and I decided to go off the beaten path. From the candlelight by the fireplace to the greenery and ocean views; this place was everything I'd hoped it would be. The evening was magic thanks to the friendly staff, good drinks, ambiance, and most of all the food. The dishes felt prepared and the flavor is there when everywhere else dares to be boring. Try the lamb and scallops. The escagot was such a good start to the evening. 10/10 would go again. Highly recommended.
Great old pub! Itโs a must stop anytime in Laguna! The food is great and itโs like stepping back in time. Great outdoor patio as well. Hidden Gem
